Ron Gant is my favorite player and has been since 1989. Even though I am a diehard Red Sox fan, and Gant has never played for the Sox, he remains my favorite player. Other players who I have enjoyed watching include Kirby Puckett, Andre Dawson, Roger Clemens (pre-Yankee days), Pedro Martinez and Nomar Garciaparra (I know this is a page about Ron Gant, so that will be all I mention of other players).

The story of how Gant became my favorite player is a strange but simple one. Back in 1990, I was playing in an APBA fantasy league and our commissioner had to finsih drafting my team for me (the last 5 rounds or so). He informed me that I had picked up Mark Grant, a reliever from the Padres. I was pretty happy with the pick at the time. Grant had put together his best season in 1989, going 8-2 with a 3.33 ERA in 116.1 innings out of the bullpen.

Closer to the season, the commissioner informed me that he had made a mistake, and I had "R. Gant 3B", not M. Grant RP". I was bummed at the time, since Gant was a virtual unknown coming off a bad second season in which he was sent to A ball to learn to play the outfield.

So as the 1990 season started, I began watching Braves games as often as I could to see how Gant was doing. 1990 turned out to be one of the best years of his career. Ron hit a career high .303 with 32 HR, 84 RBI and 33 SB. It was also the first of his back-to-back 30-30 seasons.

As it turned out, I was very pleased with my pickup, as Gant became a valubale member of my team then and a player that I love to watch and also his collect memorabilia. My Ron Gant collection includes the following:

 70 Different Baseball Cards
1 8x10 photo (in Cardinals uniform)
Sports Illustrated from 9/27/93 with Gant on cover
 1996 Starting Lineup figurine
