Boston took the lead in the series behind a strong outing from Bruce Hurst (8.0, 6 H, 2 R, 9 K) and timely hitting from the top of the lineup. Two Boston triples, by Wade Boggs and Dwight Evans helped lead the way. Mark McGwire (3-4, HR, 2 RBI) led the Athletics effort. Jose Canseco and Carney Lansford chipped in two hits apiece for the A's.
Player of the Game: Bruce Hurst
Two three run innings by the Red Sox led them to the victory as the Athletics fell short in their comeback effort late. The Sox jumped out early on a 3-run HR by Mike Greenwell (4-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) but lost the lead in the 7th as Ron Hassey (1-4, 2 RBI) singled in two and Stan Javier (1-1, 2B, RBI) had a pinch-hit double. The A's briefly took the lead in the top half of the eighth, on a four base error by CF Ellis Burks. The Red Sox mounted a comeback in their half of the eighth, as Burks (1-4, 2B, 2 RBI) atoned for his mistake with the 2-run double. Jim Rice added a sacrifice fly to finish the scoring for Boston

Oakland climbed back into the series, taking Game 3, 4-2. Starter Bob Welch (7.0, 5 H, 2 R) shut down the Red Sox and 3 solo home runs led the way for the Athletics. Luis Polonia added 2 hits, as did Mike Greenwell in the losing cause.

Taking advantage of two costly errors, the Red Sox came from behind with a six run 7th to regain control of the series. Dave Stewart (6.0, 7 H, 5 R, 1 ER) was solid until errors by Mark McGwire and Terry Steinbach helped open the flood gates. The inning, and Stewart's day was capped by a 3-run HR by Dwight Evans (1-5, HR, 3 RBI). Marty Barrett had a 3 hit game for Boston and Jody Reed added 2 of his own. Stan Javier, Mark McGwire and Don Baylor all had 2 hits for Oakland. Bruce Hurst (6.0, 9 H, 3 R, 6 K) overcame a rough 6th inning to take the win.

A wild won was the clincher for Boston. The Sox jumped out early on a 2-run HR by Mike Greenwell (2-5, HR , 2 RBI) only to see the A's jump ahead in the bottom of the 1st on a 3-run HR by Jose Canseco (1-3, HR, 4 RBI). Oakland couldn't hold the lead for long, as Todd Benzinger (2-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI) led off the 2nd with a solo HR. Marty Barrett ( 2-3, RBI) gave Boston the lead again with a 2 out RBI single. Oakland would not quit, and tied the game in the 5th on Dave Henderson's (4-5, 2B, HR, 2 RBI) 2-run HR. Single run's in the 6th and 7th, courtesy of Wade Boggs (1-5, RBI) and Todd Benzinger respectively finished off the A's. Roger Clemens (5.1, 7 H, 5 R) was shaky, but picked up the victory.
