The Reds chipped back into it by beating up the Athletics. A 6 run 1st inning paved the way for the pummeling. Starter Mike Moore (.1, 5 H, 6 R) only lasted .1 inning before giving way. Five Reds had multi-hit games, led by Billy Hatcher (4-6, RBI). Chris Sabo and Eric Davis had 3 hits apiece. Hal Morris and Bill Doran has 2 each. Tom Browning (7.0, 4 H, 1 R, 5 K) was solid, including a stretch of 7 in a row retired.

A classic! Jose Rijo (7.0, 4 H, 1 R) and Dave Stewart (CG, H, R, 5 K) dueled in a great matchup. Oakland took the lead in the 7th on a RBI double by Ron Hassey (1-3, RBI). Stewart carried a no-hitter thru 7.2, before Billy Hatcher (1-4, HR, RBI) tied the game with a solo home run. That was the only hit Stewart would allow. Rob Dibble proceded to retire the first 5 batters he faced and then with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th, Dave Henderson (1-4, HR, RBI) ended the game with a walk off homer.

Another great pitching performance and and a solid game for Dave Henderson (2-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI) led the Athletics to the series victory. A 2 run 1st off Jack Armstrong (5.1, 7 H, 4 R) got Oakland off to the start it needed. The Reds clawed back to within one, led by Eric Davis (2-4, 3B, RBI) and Billy Hatcher (2-4, 2B, SB) but came up short. The Reds lost 3 base runners to plays at the plate, which proved to be costly.
