Both starters, Orel Hershiser (8.0, 5 H, 2 ER) and Roger Clemens (7.0, 5 H, 3 R, 12 K), brought their A games to the mound as the game remained scoreless until the 6th. The Red Sox scored first, taking advantage of a Kirk Gibson error that scored Wade Boggs (2-4, 2 2B), who had earlier doubled. The Sox extended the lead in the 7th on an Ellis Burks (2-5, 2B, HR, 2 RBI) solo homer. The Dodgers came back and tied it in their half of the 7th, on a John Shelby (1-4, 2B, RBI) double and a sacrifice fly by Mike Scioscia (1-2, RBI). Both teams added a run in the 8th and the game went to extra innings tied at three. Both bullpens pitched superb, combining for 6 perfect innings before the Sox won it in the 11th on back-to-back doubles from Mike Greenwell (1-4) and Burks. Red Sox pitching struck out 17 batters in the game.
Player of the Game: Ellis Burks
Another battle at Dodger Stadium. Both starting pitchers were shaky and neither figured in the decision. The Red Sox knocked Tim Belcher from the game after two innings and three runs. Tim Leary (4.0, 0 H, 2 K) pitched excellent in long relief and allowed the Dodgers to get back into the game. After two runs of their own in the 1st, Mike Marshall (3-5, HR, 2 RBI) tied it in the 3rd with a solo HR. Marshall then briefly gave the Dodgers the lead in the 7th with an RBI single off reliever Dennis Lamp. The Sox would not give in, as they led off the 8th against Alejandro Pena with a triple, intentional walk and a two-run double by Todd Benzinger (1-4, GW 2B, 2 RBI). Later in the inning, the Sox added insurance on a pinch-hit RBI double by Larry Parrish. The Dodgers comeback attempt was thwarted as Lee Smith pitched a perfect ninth to record the save.

Smack! Thats how to sum up this game. The Dodgers smacked around four Boston pitchers to climb into the series. Every Dodger starter had at least one hit except for Jeff Hamilton and John Shelby. Franklin Stubbs (3-5, 2 HR, 6 RBI) two-run HR in the second would be all starter John Tudor (CG, 4 H) would need. Six Dodgers had multi-hit games and four (Sax, Marshall, Stubbs & Anderson) had three or more hits. Other highlights for the Dodgers included a grand slams by Mike Marshall (5th inning) and Franklin Stubbs (8th). The Dodgers sent 14 men to the plate in the 8th, scoring 11 times. Eight of the runs came off Jeff Sellers (1.0, 6 H, 8 R)
Player of the Game: Mike Marshall (5-6, 2B, GS HR, 6 RBI)
Picasso couldn't have done it any better. The best pitching matchup of the series. Both pitchers dominated early. Roger Clemens (CG, 4 H, 0 ER, 7 K) took a perfect game into the 5th and after a shaky first, Orel Hershiser (CG, 4 H, R) settled down to allow no-hits the next four innings. The Dodgers did all their damage in the 5th. After singles by Mike Marshall (1-4) and John Shelby (1-3) to lead off the inning, a Jody Reed error scored the first run with two outs. Dave Anderson (1-3, 2 RBI) singled home the next two runs to widen the margin. Clemens settled down after the 5th and proceeded to throw four more perfect innings. After allowing a run in the 6th, on a single by Ellis Burks (2-4, 2B, RBI), Hershiser only let one more runner reach base the rest of the way.

Another classic and another great pitchers duel. The Dodgers struck first in the 5th on a 2-run HR by Jeff Hamilton (2-5, HR, 2 RBI). The Sox countered in the bottom of the 5th with two on a Wade Boggs (3-5, 2 RBI) single. Both runners that scored were walked by starter Tim Belcher (6.0, 4 H, 3 R), his only miscue of the day. Todd Benzinger (1-4, HR) broke the tie with a solo home run to lead off the 7th. After seven strong, Bruce Hurst (7.0, 4 H, 2 R) gave way to the bullpen and the Dodgers capitalized on the move. Mike Marshall (1-5) led off with a double and later scored on a fielders choice. Both bullpens buckled down after that, and the game remained tied until the 12th. With two outs, Tim Leary walked Dwight Evans and then allowed a double to Mike Greenwell (1-5, GW RBI) which scored Evans, who barely beat the relay home.
Player of the Game: Mike Greenwell
The Red Sox wrapped up this excellent series in less that dramatic fashion. Mike Boddicker (CG Sho, 6 H, 7 K) cruised to the victory, only allowing four runners to reach scoring position. Marty Barrett's (1-4, RBI) ground out in the first scored the first run. Mike Greenwell (2-4, HR, 2 RBI) added one more in the 4th with a home run. The Sox finished their scoring in the 5th with three two out runs, which was highlighted by six straight men reaaching, including five straight singles.
Player of the Game: Mike Boddicker
Series MVP: Wade Boggs (.348 (8-23), 3 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, 5 BB)
